Stainz Auf Los Angeles, Die Stadt der Engel, lost in translation!
Here is a strange story. Made moreso because I will write in both languages for both my Global Audience, and to thank the locals of a German-speaking village that we have just moved to. Wir kommt hier zu die schönen Dorf von Stainz auf der Megatropolis Stadt der Engel, L.A. Beverly Hills. This article will be written in my best pigeon language of Österreich deutsche und English, since I’m writing to bridge the transition of a very different lifestyle and thank the people von Stainz für ihren Großzügigkeit generosity.
Entschuldigung sie mein schlecht deutsche aber ich werde mein bestes versuchen to explain. Many people know me already from my popular Instagram profile @onnaloves mit über 90k+ followers, as the „Bionic Ballerina“ and „underwater ballerina“ who endeavours to continue high-performance athletic art even after total hip replacement (Hüftesatz?). Many people didn’t know I came hier mit meinem Mann, der ein Filmproduzent und Fotograf ist.
Wir haben einen Lebensstil aus der Stadt der Lichter aufgegeben, als Gegenleistung für eine neue Gemeinschaft Community mit Environment und Comraderie. We exchanged our lifestyle from the City of Lights to join a smaller community. (Und also to escape! I mean, have you seen the news coming out of California and US? Apparently there is „no such thing as global warming“ and yet the entire Wine County outside of LA burned down, North Korea is pointing missiles at LA, and politicians are confused and squabbling over rights of life and gun ownership in the face of massacres, while unnaturally huge hurricanes are determined to destroy Florida and sink our container ship). So, we are leaving Hollywood then. This only happens in films after all.
Aber, making this huge transition comes with some interesting shifts in perspective. Ich würde in England geboren und mein Mann hat sein ganzes leben in der Hollywood Filmindustrie in Los Angeles gelebt. So, I am the communication bridge between the American perspective and European, a bit like something out of Star Trek you might imagine, because technically I have been all over the world to translate to you what it now means to be in the tiny German speaking village of Stainz, „…und warum hier?“ as was with the shocked expression we were greeted on the first errand of business with the Sparkasse Bank.
A man in grüne Lederhose was running around looking for a manager who spoke English to assist us with mein broken deutsche. And whilst we thought that was rather quaint they undoubtedly must have thought we were crazy Aliens. However, Herr Schmölzer Daniel und sein Kollege Manuel waren super hilfsbereit. And although this could be because the village bank has not lost any of its individual charm unlike that in the megatropolis of L.A. There is actually a huge difference between US banking and that in Europe. In den U.S.A zum Beispiel die Einrichtung eines Kontos ist nicht so einfach. Sie brauchen ein paar hundert Dollar, um in den USA ein Konto zu eröffnen, aber hier establishing a bank account here is much easier.
„How did you get a job here, in Stainz from L.A“ they asked with great curiosity. „auf der Internet“ aber nicht ganz, not quite…
In Los Angeles the biggest distribution of work falls into these two main categories, zwei Kategorien, aus denen wir beide stammen: Film industry, and Marketing. Film industry is like churning out stories from a factory. But each story is finite. The production is planned and a city supporting an entirely imaginary system is built and then wrapped up in six weeks. In Los Angeles existiert die Infrastruktur, um neue imaginäre Städte zu unterstützen support, ohne sie zerlegen zu müssen. Diese Stadt der Lichter ist auf Fantasie gebaut auf, die das Marketing-Industrie ernährt.
Imagination touches all. Imagination is a global business. My speciality is to use imagination to connect businesses to the World, meine Spezialität ist Phantasie, um Unternehmen mit der Welt zu verbinden. It is through globalising businesses via the internet, that I can work anywhere in the world. But there is no work for an aerospace composites engineer in Los Angeles. However in Styria my client is in the Center of „Green Silicon Valley“ the European equivalent of the highest concentration of research and development outside of California. So wurde mein Kunde „ATT advanced thermal technologies GmbH “ mein Arbeitgeber.
Unsere beiden globalisierten Unternehmen verlassen sich auf der Internet, und so wir trafen Herr Merl-Zeilinger Markus aus dem Handyshop, dem wir danken möchten, dass sie uns helfen, unsere Verbindung zur Welt wiederherzustellen, um Skype-Videoanrufe zu tätigen. In Austria Internet is mainly cellular, and the signal is patchy in the countryside. Which makes us realise how much we take industrialisation for granted.
Our temporary home is a Ferrienhaus on a farm auf Theißelhof [pronounced thy•ssl•hoff auf English] aber wir sind nicht hier um Urlaub geblieben, es ist nur um Übergang während unser Haus wird gebaut von Herr Scheer Erich. Our builder and landlord Erich Scheer introduced us to Stainz and has helped us so much to get established here. Beginning with finding us this beautiful farm on which to live while the barn conversion is being complete. Through to exploring the future idea of making us feel at home by being open to a ninja warrior construction in the back yard.
Ich kommt aus LA als Botschafter der weld anerkannt Muskel stand „Original Muscle Beach“, wo ich die Ringe fliege. Ich möchte meine akrobatischen Sportarten hier für alle Familien mitbringen, also müssen die Ringen wieder aufbauen. Ich werde neue acro freunde unterrichten müssen. We are moving to a cul de sac where there is a family park on one triquarter, a corn field out the back, and the entrance flanked by the 1874 Stainz Train Station. It’s pretty surreal, seeing busloads of visitors from Germany being dropped off zum Bahnhofstraße Flaschenzug. So, mein Mann ist sehr glücklich, weil er in seinem Vorgarten eine Dreharbeiten hat.
Bis zum Tag bin ich ein Ingenieur und Geschäftsentwicklung für ATT, nachts beschäftigt ich mich mit USA-Marketing, und am Wochenende spiele ich Acro Ballerina. Und von zu Haus, Mein Mann arbeitet an Filmlogistik auf einem Zeitraum Drama Episodenfilm, um Hoffnung die schöne Umgebung zu nutzen.
We both have a love for nostalgia, and real people, small-Holdings. Austria is where we can live thoroughly connected to the ecosystem and dependency on local produce, which is logistically impossible in L.A. To feed a Megatropolis like LA, requires mass farming and interstate economy.
Lebensmittel in den USA werden zwischen den Staaten transportiert. Lebensmittelbehalter sind so groß und „Supersize Me“, dass sie Schwarzenegger Arme benötigen, um Milch zu gießen. Now we know why Schwarzenegger was able to come from Graz to LA, he had strong arms like me to lift Milch. My husband still has to get used to the smaller produce containers, which is even reflected in kitchen appliance sizes right down to car engine sizes. There is a big focus on efficiency here which is not a mindset yet fully embraced in the US.
Wir sind keine verschwenderischen Menschen, aber es wird einige Zeit dauern, bis mein Mann sich an „Mini-me“ -Optionen in Europa gewöhnt, weil die Kultur von oben herabfällt und alles über Amerika über Massenlogistik und Skala geht. We cannot fit an American Thanksgiving Turkey in a typical European Oven, but I doubt Supersize Turkeys want to emigrate to Austria either. So don’t worry! We come in peace, not to take over your beautiful town and assimilate you. In fact, we both hope to integrate more fully, and our deepest gratitude to all so far who got us started:
